A guest enjoying the comfortable living and reading room at The Colton House
in Belize City offered an unsolicited comment as I entered, "This is the best
place in Belize City". She was enjoying the classy, colonial ambiance
nurtured by owners Alan and Ondina Colton who are usually on hand to assist
travelers with any questions and help aquaint you with their friendly
guesthouse and Belize. The red-roofed colonial home built in 1928 shows
loving care and charm from the polished pine hardwood floors, overstuffed
bookshelves, to the sheer white curtains on the windows. Only a block from
the Caribbean Sea and Belize River in the historic Ft. George area, The Colton
House is a favorite with traveling business people and the expat community in
Belize.
White wooden hanging swings beckon guests to enjoy the cool verandah. Sit
back and visit with other guests, your hosts, or catch up on reading or
paperwork. Four spacious guestrooms occupy the main floor, each with a little
different configuration, but all equally charming and comfortable. Featuring
beautiful antique period furnishings, pine floors, plush rugs, ceiling fans,
and complimentary coffee, two have a private bath, and two rooms share a bath.
One has air-conditioning and a Victorian iron four-poster double bed. The Garden Room on the lower level is air-conditioned and has a private bath, TV, refrigerator, microwave, toaster, and coffee maker. Large windows and private entrances overlook the verandah with the Ft. George Hotel across the street and beyond to the Caribbean Sea. A special place to relax and enjoy the trade winds and near-perfect climate.
Within walking distance of downtown Belize City and a 15-20 minute ride from
the International airport, The Colton House offers an idyllic retreat for
those non-smoking travelers who favor a quieter ambiance, home style
hospitality, and appreciate the attentive service from the owners. Children
over the age of 9 are welcome. Exercise some caution when walking around
Belize City, as petty crime has plagued this bustling city for many years now.
Travelers are warned not to walk about at night. Leave your jewelry, wallet,
and luggage at the Inn and enjoy daytime walks, taxi rides, biking, or touring
in a rental car as perfectly safe entertainment. The city's cab drivers are
courteous, helpful and honest.
Several good restaurants are close by, with tasty Caribbean seafood and American cuisine plentiful throughout the city. Diving and snorkeling excursions are available through the marina's dive shop in front of the Radisson Ft. George Hotel a block away. Inland jungle and river tours, Mayan ruins, the Belize Zoo, Jaguar Preserve, and offshore reefs are just some of the many sights to see while in Belize. Make yourself comfortable at The Colton House and enjoy the hospitality of another one of Belize City's premier Inns.
